Students of new media, whether for fine or applied art purposes, need far more than technical competency to be successful. I provide the information, examples and practice necessary for students to master their hardware and software tools, but challenge students to demonstrate critical thinking in their process and practice. I want to see their level of comprehension go beyond rote memorization to a point at which they are confident in formulating questions and searching for answers without hand-holding. Additionally, I stress the importance of learning how to write about and discuss work in a concise and meaningful manner and provide a safe constructive environment for students who may lack confidence in their abilities to verbalize the nuances and specific meanings inherent in their work.
