Every 5,000 Steps
Created in 2004, Every 5,000 Steps was a conceptual documentation project that was eventually classified as "mail art" according to its means of delivery. For several weeks I wore a pedometer, and every 5,000 steps I would stop and try to represent visually and in writing precisely where I was and what I was doing at that moment. Depending on what was at hand, original source materials included Polaroid iZone photos, video, sketches, found objects and the occasional recipe.
Each set of four representations was compiled into a new volume of "Every 5,000 Steps," a simple accordion book that was bound shut and sent via U.S. mail to a small group of subscribers. Three volumes (that's 60,000 steps) were produced during the course of the project.
